Today, in commemoration of the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF), ARFH joined partners and stakeholders on an awareness walk from Berger to Jabi, Abuja.
The walk had in attendance representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH), Bashir Foundation for Fistula and Women’s Health, alongside other partners, stakeholders and organizations committed to ending obstetric fistula and advancing maternal health in Nigeria.
During the event, Samson Odukogbe, ARFH’s Knowledge & Communications Officer, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of Dr. Kehinde Osinowo, the Chief Executive Officer, reaffirming ARFH’s unwavering commitment to:
Strengthening health systems that uphold the dignity and rights of women and girls, training health workers and building sustainable capacity, promoting access to quality RMNCAH services, advancing psychosocial support, rehabilitation, and advocacy to eliminate obstetric fistula
Obstetric fistula happens when a woman has a long, difficult childbirth without the right medical help. This can cause a tear between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum, leading to constant leakage of urine or stool. Many women with this condition face shame, pain, and isolation. This awareness walk was held to let people know it can be prevented and to support women who are living with it.
Fistula survivors were also present, sharing their touching stories of pain and strength. Their stories helped people see how real and serious the issue is, and why we must act now.
Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) and Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials were also shared during the walk to raise public awareness and promote prevention.
The event drew strong media attention, with various news outlets covering the walk and amplifying the message that ending obstetric fistula is not just necessary—it is possible.
Obstetric fistula is a serious but preventable condition. ARFH is committed to building a Nigeria where every woman can have a safe and healthy pregnancy, get the care she needs, and live with dignity—without being left behind.
Let’s walk the talk—for her, with her, and because of her.
