Capturing Impact: The CODSAiN Project in Kano & Lagos

The Community-Oriented DMPA-SC Self Injection Acceleration in Nigeria (CODSAiN) Project is transforming communities by expanding access to self-injectable contraceptives and other FP methods, empowering women with reproductive choices, and fostering change.

Recently, Fatima Alkali (Senior Communications Officer, Gates Foundation), Samson  Odukogbe (Knowledge & Communications Officer, ARFH), Univista Media, and implementing partners embarked on a documentary journey across Kano and Lagos. Through interviews with government officials, beneficiaries, community, and religious leaders, we captured firsthand how family planning is improving lives and shifting cultural norms.

Kano: Tradition Meets Progress

In Fagge and Rimin Gado, cultural and religious beliefs play a significant role in reproductive decisions. However, growing acceptance of childbirth spacing (Tazara) is leading to improved maternal and child health.

Impact in Kano:
More women confidently adopting DMPA-SC self-injectable contraceptive and other FP methods for autonomy and convenience

Increased male and religious leader support, shifting societal norms
Government commitment strengthening reproductive health services
Confidential door-to-door FP services reaching women who might otherwise lack access

A religious leader we interviewed emphasized that Tazara is essential for maternal and child well-being, highlighting the critical role of faith-based advocacy in family planning.

Lagos: Women Taking Charge of Their Futures

In Kosofe, Somolu, and the Egun riverine communities, women are redefining family planning as “future planning,” recognizing its impact on economic stability and household well-being.

Impact in Lagos:
Higher demand for contraceptives, leading to better birth spacing and health outcomes
Women making independent reproductive choices, reducing unplanned pregnancies
Stronger health system partnerships, ensuring sustained access to services
Confidential door-to-door FP services providing women with discreet, accessible options

One woman shared how access to contraception has allowed her to pursue education and support her family with her business, a testament to the power of reproductive autonomy.

Why This Matters

Healthier families: Women with reproductive choices experience better health and financial stability
Stronger communities: When women thrive, families and societies flourish
Breaking barriers: Increasing access to contraception empowers women and challenges outdated norms

The CODSAiN Project is not just creating awareness—it’s changing lives. As more women gain access to reproductive health services, including confidential door-to-door FP services, we move closer to a future where every woman can make informed, autonomous decisions about her body and future.
