2024 NIGERIA HIV PREVENTION CONFERENCE: “Adolescents and Young People (AYPs) as Change Agents”

On May 7th, 2024, the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH Nigeria) team, led by CEO Dr. Kehinde Osinowo, participated in the 2024 Nigeria HIV Prevention Youth Conference hosted by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

The conference convened esteemed guests, including the Representative of His Excellency, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Nigeria Country Coordinator for @PEPFAR representatives from UNAIDS, UNESCO, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and government officials from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Key discussions at the conference centered around HIV prevention strategies targeting adolescents and young people. Dr. Funmi Adesanya, Nigeria Country Coordinator for The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), delivered a compelling keynote address emphasizing the “Prevention is Better than Cure” approach. This approach underscores the importance of proactive prevention measures leading to healthier lives and the realization of life goals among young populations.

The conference served as a pivotal platform to advocate for equitable and inclusive human rights-based approaches in HIV prevention, particularly for adolescents and young people. Representatives from the United Nations System, Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM), APYIN, NEPHWAN, SACA, and KP groups extended their support and acknowledged NACA’s commendable efforts in HIV prevention across Nigeria.

In her remarks, the Director-General of NACA Dr. TEMITOPE ILORI reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate by continually strengthening HIV prevention intervention programs nationwide.

ARFH‘s presence at the conference was also marked by Dr. Kolapo Oyeniyi , Director of Programs, and Samson Odukogbe, Communications Officer, demonstrating the organization’s active engagement and contribution to the ongoing efforts in combating HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
