Achievements on HIV Grant
Improving Educational opportunity for vulnerable children in Northern Nigeria
The Global Fund through Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) has continued to improve the quality of lives of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria. At the moment, over 15000 vulnerable children (VC) have been provided with different supports which include Health, Nutrition, Psycho-social and Education among others. Using direct education support and block granting, over 7000 VC have been supported with education intervention on the Round 9 phase II of the HIV grant.
VC and other pupils in Wudil Special Primary School (WSPS), Kano are beneficiaries of the GF education support. Working through ARFH, the Principal Recipient and CISHAN, the Sub recipient, GF provided resources to WASOBIA (a Community Based Organisation) which constructed gender sensitive toilets which hitherto was not available. Female pupils usually had to rush home to toilet during school hours while returning back to school because of the lack of water and sanitation. Through the block granting initiative, a gender sensitive toilet was built. It is also worthy of note that roof of some of the classrooms which had been damaged by storms and bats were also repaired by the organization to the joy and admiration of the host community.
The school’s PTA and Child Protection Committee of the community collaborated with WAZOBIA in determining the felt needs of the school which led to the decision to embark on these two laudable initiatives. With a little, the GF has been able to achieve so much in Wudil Special School and the right of the girl child to education is being promoted.
